Sky Angel History and Timeline
Sky Angel has been America's Premier provider for Faith and Family Television for over 25 years. Along the way we have been seen as pioneers in televsion broadcasting services, an uncensored voice for the Christian ministry and an important part of the local communities where Sky Angel employs hundreds of people.
Take some to time to review the history of Sky Angel.
Sky Angel (known as “Video Satellite Systems” then “Dominion”) was among nine pioneering applicants who filed for a license with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to operate new high-powered direct broadcast satellites.
The company was one of the first to be awarded a license and construction permit by the FCC to build and launch a direct broadcast satellite service.
The company formed a relationship with EchoStar for joint distribution on the EchoStar III satellite to use the same equipment.
Sky Angel went on the air with six television channels and three radio channels, eventually expanding to as many as 36 television and radio channels.
Sky Angel was the sole surviving DBS licensee from that first round of nine applicants, which included COMSAT, CBS, RCA, Western Union, and USSB.
A transponder on the EchoStar III satellite failed in April, 2006,creating a need to research alternative delivery systems.
Sky Angel opened their Cleveland, Tenn. customer contact center and network operations center.
Sky Angel began testing the IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) platform.
Sky Angel U.S. LLC began to offer programming exclusively through the IPTV platform.
Sky Angel offers more Christian based television and radio programming than ever before, plus features such as 48-hour playback on all the Faith-based television channels, an expanding Video On Demand library, TiVo compatibility and more.
Future plans include global expansion.
