Internet Requirement Information >
I don’t have a computer. Can I still use the Sky Angel IPTV service?
Yes. All you need is a high-speed Internet connection. However, we have found that setting up some routers will require the use of a computer. There is no need to have a computer in the home after setup. If you have any questions regarding set up, please look for questions and answers in this section or contact our Customer Service Dept.
What is the bandwidth requirement for Sky Angel IPTV?
The recommended minimum bandwidth (Internet connection speed) is 1.5 Mbps. The Sky Angel IPTV service consumes approx. 900-950 kbps for video/audio (TV channels) and approx. 128 kbps for audio (radio) only channels.
What is a High-Speed Modem?
High-Speed Modem is the device provided by your Internet Service Provider in order for you to access the Internet at higher rates of speed than the typical dial-up modem. Modems that work best with Sky Angel are cable and Telco high-speed modems. A High-Speed Modem is required in order to use the Sky Angel IPTV.
What encryption level does the Sky Angel IPTV set-top box recognize?
Currently the Sky Angel receiver box will recognize encryption standards WEP and WPA. The Sky Angel receiver box does not work with WPA2 or higher other levels of security at this time. Sky Angel is looking into enhancements that will allow for this type of feature to be available in the future. As these enhancements become available, Sky Angel will advise their customers and provide more information on how to utilize these features. The receiver box may be delivered to the customer’s home with an earlier software version that only allows for WEP encryption. Because of this, the box must first be connected directly to a LAN connection or to a router that must be lowered to WEP or no security until the box can obtain the most current software version (currently 2.5.0 as of June, 2009). Once the box has been upgraded automatically by connecting it to the Internet, the customer can choose WPA security again and set the Sky Angel box to the same. If connecting hardwired, the security encryption is not required.
What wireless spectrum does the Sky Angel IPTV set-top box use?
The Sky Angel receiver box recognizes the wireless- B, G and N technology, which are currently the most widely used router frequencies. If you have an older router, such as wireless-B only, it is recommended that you upgrade to the newer and faster wireless G or N router. Router configurations that are necessary to work with Sky Angel –Wireless router settings work best when set to “G-only" or "mixed". It should not be set to "B" only or "N" only. "Mixed" mode that includes "N" can be used after the STB has been upgraded to version 2.5.0. Note: The STB can be temporarily hardwired to your modem/router in order to download this upgrade. To do this, connect your Sky Angel receiver to your modem or router directly with the Ethernet cable supplied. Once connected, turn on and off the box; you may see a dialog box on the screen prompting you to download new software or that new software is being downloaded. Once this is complete, the box my turn off manually then back on again. You can now check for the 2.5.0 software version on the Advanced Configuration screen. If the box has updated, you can unplug the Ethernet cable from the box and the modem/router and now set the box back to WLAN and search for available wireless networks. To dos this, go to the Network Configuration screen, choose WLAN and you should now see 1.WEP/NONE, 2. WPA TKIP, 3. WPA AES - Choose the appropriate wireless setting based on your routers configuration then press INFO on the remote to search for your wireless device. Once you have selected the correct wireless network, use the Vol- to move the curser into the Key: field and enter your wireless network Key. The security encryption must be either WEP (64 or 128 bit) or WPA (TKIP or AES). WPA2 will NOT work. Note: The STB must be upgraded to version 2.5.0 in order to use WPA encryption. We have found that the wireless channel on most routers works best with Sky Angel when set to channel 4, 9, or 11.
How do I find the speed of my Internet connection?
Go to www.skyangel.com/speedtest to test the speed of your Internet connection. We recommend a minimum high-speed Internet performance of 1500 kilobits download (1.5 megabit or 1.5 Mb) to purchase and view the Sky Angel IPTV service. Heavy Internet use within your home may require higher bandwidth in order to view Sky Angel and surf the Internet at the same time. When performing a speed test, please keep in mind that your results may vary at different times based on Internet traffic and home Internet use. To determine the Internet connection speed you are actually paying for, contact your Internet Service Provider and upgrade your connection speed if necessary.
I have dial-up Internet. Will Sky Angel IPTV work with my current Internet service?
Unfortunately, in order to purchase and use the Sky Angel service, you must have a high-speed Internet connection at or greater than 1.5 Mbps per second. Call your local ISP (Internet Service Provider) to upgrade now or call Sky Angel Customer Service for more information to find a high-speed Internet provider in your area.
I have satellite Internet. Will Sky Angel IPTV work with my current Internet service?
Unfortunately, satellite Internet providers do not provide the sufficient bandwidth needed in order to access Sky Angel IPTV. This is due to their Fair Access Policy (FAP). You may see speeds that meet the Sky Angel IPTV minimum requirement, but the companies’ policies to restrict bandwidth based on downloaded use prohibits Sky Angel recommending these Internet provider options.
I have high-speed Internet, but do not know if it will work with your IPTV service. How do I find out what Internet speed I currently subscribe to?
To find out the speed of your current Internet connection and see if you have sufficient Internet speed for our service click here. You can also contact your ISP and ask what level of Internet speed you are currently subscribing to. If your Internet Service Provider is satellite, wireless, Wi-Fi or WiMax, their Fair Access Policy may prohibit use of our type of service– call Sky Angel Customer Service for details.
I have Clearwire or another Wi-Fi type Internet service. Will this work with the Sky Angel IPTV service?
Unfortunately there is no Wi-Fi or other non-traditional Internet provider that will accommodate the Sky Angel service needs due to their Fair Access Policy (The amount of bandwidth used). You may see speeds that meet the Sky Angel minimum requirement, but the companies’ policies to restrict bandwidth based on downloaded use prohibits Sky Angel recommending these Internet provider options.
What is the Fair Access Policy?
In short, Fair Access Policy it is how much data you can use in a pre-determined amount of time before your service provider slows down your service to almost dial-up speeds for a certain amount of time or shuts you off completely. This can also be known as AUP or simply part of a company Terms of Use.
