Shadow of the Moon

By Jim Phelps August 30th, 2010

I just watched a real gem on Sky Angel VOD — The Shadow of the Moon.  This documentary gives the complete history of the Apollo space program, including crew members for every single Apollo mission which flew to the Moon, and allows them to tell their story in their own words.

I was 10 years old when Apollo 11 landed on the Moon, and Neal Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the Moon, uttered his immortal words: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”  I can still remember it to this day.

It was really exciting to watch the entire history of the Apollo program, because I was too young to remember anything before Apollo 8 - the first one to actually go to the Moon (although it didn’t actually land on the Moon).

I highly recommend Shadow of the Moon.

Christian Country Music!

By Jim Phelps August 28th, 2010

Sky Angel recently added a new radio station — Inspirational Country Radio — Channel 206!

ICR plays a mixture of Christian and family-friendly country music, interspersed with Christian messages.  Big-name country singers are featured.

I’ve listened a lot to ICR, and I haven’t heard anything that you wouldn’t want your friends and family to listen to.

In fact, whenever I’ve listened to a country music station, and heard some good and some bad music, I’ve always wished for a country music station that would play only clean and Christian music.

In other words, Inspirational Country Radio!

Listen for a few minutes.  You’ll be hooked, just like I am!

The Little Princess

By Jim Phelps August 25th, 2010

I’m watching one of my favorite movies of all time, The Little Princess, starring Shirley Temple!

It showed on the Liberty Channel (channel 132), on Monday night at 1 AM!  But that’s no problem, because Sky Angel allows you to “rewind” up to two days, to see programs which showed while you were sleeping or at work (or both!).

“Rewind” is one of the best features of Sky Angel.

Movie Review: Dialtone - VOD

By Mason Goodknight August 24th, 2010

My wife and I watched the new film “Dialtone” on VOD the other night and I thought it was pretty well done. It has a twist ending to it and some real suspense. The story revolves around a nominal Christian who recently lost his wife in a car accident. He is soon introduced to a phone that can call two days into the past. He gets a police list with names of people every day who have died in the last 48hrs. His wife died less than two days ago.  What will he do? The movie is about sharing your faith. It is influenced by Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron’s “Way of the Master” witnesing style. It is only 42 minutes long so won’t keep you there forever. I reccomend it for it’s quality and conviction. We all need to get out there and share our faith. I can’t reccomend too highly Ray and Kirk’s system. Only because it is truly a Biblical system. Check it out at www.livingwaters.com

Dangerous Calling!

By Robert Steffensen August 24th, 2010

I just found “Dangerous Calling” in the VOD section under Action/Thriller! I was pleasantly surprised how well done this movie was for a low budget Christian film. It really kept me on the edge of my seat, and was quite entertaining. Evan and his wife Nora have just moved to a small town to take the place of a recently deceased pastor. It turns out the parsonage is under construction, so they move in temporarily with a seemingly kind elderly women who attends their church. Evan and Nora begin to butt heads a bit with some of the older church members over their support of the youth pastor who is trying to reach out to the youth of the community. After a few twists it turns out there is more going on in this congregation than they bargained for. It also did a nice job of addressing the issue of churches being closed off to those who need it the most. “Dangerous calling” is rated PG 13, but other than some scary and suspenseful scenes it is very clean. I would definitely recommend it for teens on up who enjoy action/thrillers!

I agree it was great film. It was not just “Good for a Christian film” Like I often say. It was actually a good thriller. Worth the watch for sure. Cloud Ten is one of the best Christian production companies. Probably in the top three.

Surfing VOD

By Merwinna Stevens August 23rd, 2010

I  was surfing the VOD selections and have found many that I want to watch.  There are so many good family movies to choose from.  I recommend that you check the Video on Demand offerings out.  I highly recommend “The Finger of God” and “The Search for the Real Mount Sinai.” The Finger of God is a documentary that shows God in action today.  The Search for the Real Mount Sinai from the eyes of two explorers.  It is fascinating.  One of the features of the mountain is a blackened summit.  Another is the boundary markers around the foot of the mountain.

The Hiding Place is a great movie about the life of Corrie Ten Boom.  Her courageous family hid the Jews from the Nazis.  Corrie and her family paid a heavy price but I am certain that they laid up much treasure in Heaven.  The older children enjoyed the Prince and Me 4; The Elephant Adventure.  It has something for everyone–adventure, intrigue, romance.  Much of the movie is set in a jungle.  It has more than one love story woven into the adventure.  I would give it 3 1/2 stars.

You can see previews of the movies that are on Video on Demand.  You can also see current movie reviews by Focus On the Family.  I find them very helpful.  I found several movies I want to share with my grandchildren.  Tomorrow we are going to watch “The Secrets of Jonathon Sperry” when Nessa takes her nap.  I will let you know how we like it.

My ISP kicked “It’s Supernatural” off the air.  That could have been a bummer, but thanks to Sky Angel’s many channels, I can just watch it at another time.  I also appreciate the 48 hour review option.  What a deal!  It’s just another reason for bragging about Sky Angel.

A week ago today, my first great-grandson, Harper James, was born.  Yes, two-year-old Nessa is a big sister, and she takes it very seriously.  A friend asked her if her baby brother cries, and she replied, “He cries all the time.”  Actually, Harper is a very peaceful baby.  He does cry when hungry, getting changed and dressed, and he hates his bath.  That will change soon.  Needless to say, my television time was shorter than usual last week.

Movie Review: Blink of an Eye

By Janet Holland August 22nd, 2010

I found Blink of an Eye enjoyable. It told an interesting story using the repeated-day theme (like Groundhog Day). It included a clear gospel message. The main character’s journey toward a commitment to Christ unfolded in steps, progressing further with each “new day.” It was a creative way to show that journey.

I have been pleased that several Christian movies I have watched recently have been well done, that was not always the case in the past. This movie may not be at the top of my list (that would be Facing the Giants), but it was worth my time and is a movie that may have an impact on someone who is not a believer. (I read the reviews at blockbuster.com and saw evidence of that in some of the comments.)

You may already know this, but Facing the Giants is airing on JCTV this Friday at 11pm ET… Good thing you put that network back on your list!

Yes, thanks, Jessica! I almost have the script memorized, yet I still cry all through the movie!!

Shadow Government Movie Review

By Teresa Welch August 22nd, 2010

One of the new movies available on Sky Angel is Shadow Government.  This was a great movie to watch to understand how the technology explosion in the last century has allowed the Government to obtain more and more information about the citizens.  Although we have a right to be concerned about what is going on, the movie points out the fact that the Bible prophesies these things and that if we study the Bible, we can understand what is going on and should not be fearful.  This movie pointed out many things that are coming down the road that we were not aware of so it was good to be mindful of what to watch for.

We are thankful that we are Christians and know that our belief in Jesus Christ will allow us to understand the workings of evil and how to deal with it.

Movie Reviews

By Janet Holland August 21st, 2010

I always appreciate posts about movies someone has watched from the Sky Angel OnDemand offerings. I am cautious about “hitting that button” to spend extra dollars — it helps so much to know beforehand what others think about the movie. If I am considering a VOD movie, I often plug the title in at blockbuster.com so I can read about it and read reviews before I make my decision. Please continue to post about the movies you choose on Sky Angel VOD. It would be helpful if everyone would use “Movie Review:” as part of the title for a post, would make it easy to “catch” those posts. Thanks!

I plan to watch several of the movies in the PureFlix section. Today, I’m watching “Blink of an Eye,” will post comments on it later.
