Lights out in Dallas

By Michael McDonald June 1st, 2012

ABC recently cancelled its show, GCB, due to the public outcry from conservative Christian groups nationwide. Dr. Ted Baehr, founder and publisher of Movie Guide®: The Family Guide to Movies and Entertainment, helped launch a campaign encouraging advertisers to remove funding for the show and to turn their support to family-friendly programming.

“You don’t inspire or champion anyone by mocking and ridiculing someone’s faith,” said Dr. Baehr.

The show GBC was based on a novel by Kim Gatlin, and was meant to be a parody of southern “Christian values.” The humor in the storyline is the reality of how Amanda’s former Christian schoolmates come across as heartless, unforgiving, and “un-Christian.”

How can Christian women help  protect their reputations from perceptions such as what was seen in the show?

New Sky Angel

By Merwinna Stevens June 1st, 2012

I got my new software update this morning, and am I excited!  Vanessa is watching Smile of a Child using the 48 hour review. We have watched Auto-Be-Good, Grandfather Reads, Vipo, and now Mickey’s Farm. She is having a great time!

It is taking a little getting used to the navigation, so sometimes I push the guide when I need to push the Info button. When I pushed Sky Angel on the opening page, I wondered where all the other channels went. I found them all when I pushed FAVE.

I love seeing the other channels with their programs across the bottom of the screen. I can search without leaving my place. I also enjoy the HDTV pictures. I told my daughter that she needs Sky Angel. They do not have a provider at this time. She is thinking about it now that I told her it does not buffer. I saw It’s Supernatural when I opened up a channel for the first time. I am soooo loving this!!! Now that Nessa is going to rest, I will find and watch the 700 Club.

I will be able to blog about other programs soon. This coming week may be a bit busy. My grandson is getting married on Friday. After that I will have time to watch and blog again.

Happy Summer all!

Dick Tracy vs Cueball

By Jim Phelps May 30th, 2012

Dick Tracy vs. Cueball is the story of famed detective Dick Tracy and his efforts to solve several murders and a jewel theft.

Cueball is an ex-con who has been released from jail. However, he hasn’t learned his lesson, because he immediately commits a murder and a jewel theft.

I don’t want to spoil the story by giving all of the details. But let me say that it was a very entertaining show. The plot is realistic and believable, and the acting is very good. Best of all, it is clean and family-friendly.

You can find this and other episodes of Dick Tracy under Video on Demand / Action/Thriller.

Movie Review: The Three Musketeers - VOD - Just Added

By Mason Goodknight May 30th, 2012

Where to begin with this film. Let’s go with what good we can find. As for an action movie it is pretty good. There is lots of swordfighting, acrobatics, even gunplay. The movie moves along at a pretty good clip whenever action is happening. But when we get to the story it kind of bogs down.

First we see the young Dartanian head off to Paris to try to join the musketeers. His father and mother send him on his way with good advice. The youn want to be musketeer turns out to be an arrogant hothead who almost gets killed right off the bat. It is only due to his excellent swordsmanship that he is not quickly killed.

NOw I don’t know who did the editing but there must have been some done. There is no language and I’m sure there would be in this film if it were unedited. There is a lot of cleavage throughout due to period dresses. No outright nudity obviously. There is a background love story between the goofy young king and his queen. This becomes a major plot driver eventually. It is probably the only moral highlight of the film.

One of our famous 3 Musketeers is a reprobate former priest. Sadly he is about the only tie to God at all in the film and a filthy tie it is. Oh, of course ther is the evil Cardinal trying to take over the kingdom. Sorry, forgot about him.

Sadly almost all the motives of the heroes are selfishly driven. There is not much heroic among the lot of them. There only brightness is that they shine compared to the evil of the Cardinal.

In a way people may find comfort in this film as they may see themselves as heroic in the vein of the musketeers simply because they can find someone evil like the Cardinal to compare themsleves to.

Sadly for them and for all of us, God does not judge us accrding to others. He judges us according to His perfect Law the Ten Commandments. We end up all guilty there. We all end up liars, thieves, adulterous at heart, murderous at heart, greedy, disobedient, etc.

Thankfully, we like the Musketeers, and yes even the Cardinal can have our sins forgiven should we come humbly to the great Savior Jesus Christ in repentance and faith. This movie’s characters could do for a heavy dose of humble repentance. Let’s us keep our slef in humble repentance daily. God bless!

Remembering the Martyrs This Memorial Day

By Robert Steffensen May 29th, 2012

Photobucket
Yes… I did have a nice Memorial Day with the typical BBQ, watching a movie with my family, and then shooting some pool with my son as well, but that evening when I did some Sky Angel channel surfing, a documentary put “Memorial Day” back in focus for me! On the world Harvest channel using the 48 hr playback feature, I clicked on a program called, “Malatya.” What I found out was that “Malatya” is a city in Turkey where a Turkish pastor Necati Aydin, his assistant Ugur Yuksel, and Tilmann Geske were brutally murdered because of their Christian faith at the Zirve Christian Publishing Office back in 2007. These martyrs’ wives and other friends gave their own emotional stories of what had happened on that fateful day. I could really hear the pain in their voices as they remember their loved ones.  So on this Memorial Day and every day, let us remember to pray for missionaries all over the world who have lost their love ones and face torture and hatred on a daily basis for simply raising the banner of Christ! Their sacrifice is so immense; May our hearts ache when they ache…

Stephen’s Test of Faith

By Jim Phelps May 28th, 2012

Stephen’s Test of Faith is a great story about a 12-year-old named Stephen who is being picked on at school because he is a Christian.  He at first buckles to the pressure, but then God takes him on a journey in a dream to meet the Biblical Stephen (Acts 7).  The Biblical Stephen takes him on a journey through history, where he meets many people who are being persecuted for their faith.  In the end, the 12-year-old Stephen stands true for the Lord.

This would be a great story to show your children or church youth group!  You can find it in the Vision Video section of Video on Demand.

Fury to Freedom

By Jim Phelps May 28th, 2012

What a powerful story.  This movie is the story of Raul Ries who grew up with an abusive and neglective father.  The movie details his life.  He became amazingly like his own father toward his wife.  However, God had other plans.  Raul became born again and totally changed!  Without going into too much detail, one of the highlights of the movie was when he became reconciled with his father.  Raul Ries went on to be a powerful evangelist and the pastor of a large congregation.

I highly recommend this movie for all but the very young, due to the violence in the movie.  You can find it in the Vision Video section of Video on Demand.

Unforgotten, Sky Angel VOD!

By Robert Steffensen May 16th, 2012

Watching documentaries is one of our favorite past times around here. It is an amazing way to learn about the world around us and a plethora of things that have happened in the past. I came across a documentary on Sky Angel VOD under Sky Angel Docs called, “Unforgotten, Twenty Five Years After Willowbrook.” I had personally never even heard of Willowbrook so it peaked my interest. This 57 Min documentary takes you into the lives of several families who were negatively affected by a state run institution called Willowbrook. Back in the 50’s-70’s when a developmentally delayed child was born into a family they were very much encouraged to send these children to institutions such as Willowbrook. Sadly Willowbrook was not the kind of place where these precious children could actually thrive. In fact it was a downright disgrace to society. It was heart wrenching to see pictures and hear the stories of what these families and others had gone through. One man who was interviewed had been diagnosed as having a mental handicap at the age of 3 and placed into Willowbrook, where he was to spend the next 18 years of his life in torment before Doctors discovered that he was not mentally handicapped but instead suffered from Cerebral Palsy. “Unforgotten” is rated PG-13 and not a show for young children, but it is a very eye opening show for concerned adults. We need to make sure that as individuals and a society that we never take a persons human dignity for granted, and we should always be the ones to stand up especially for those who can not speak for themselves.

Movie Review: Stan Lee: With Great Power - VOD - Just Added

By Mason Goodknight May 14th, 2012

Are you a comic book fan? Or maybe you just like the movies like Spiderman, Hulk, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, etc. If so then you’ll wanna see this documentary. This is the documentary of the life story of Stan Lee. The creator of all those characters above and many more! I use to collect tons of comics. I don’t anymore as I felt it wasn’t very good stewardship of my funds at the time. Yet I still love heroes.

Many of these heroes have made it into mine and many other sermon illustrations. While most comic heroes are not Christians most do fight against evil. There is usually a clear line of good versus evil. They give us something to cheer for. Stan has ben a Depression kid and a WW2 vet as well as a business man who’s been up and down through thick and thin. It really is an interesting story.

You will meet Stand and his wife of sixty years Joan. They love each other and have stuck it out through everything. You will also see many celebrity interviews and learn alot about Marvel Comics. Stan is 90yrs old this year and is still creating heroes and influencing culture. Sadly there is no indication that Stan is a Christian. It gave me the added blessing of praying for this man’s salvation. I of course hope he will come to repentance and faith in the only real super hero, Jesus Christ! Give it a look and enjoy!

The Wacky World of Bruce Barry!

By Robert Steffensen May 11th, 2012

I’ve always enjoyed watching renovating programs like “Extreme Makeover” or “Trading Spaces” probably because they make renovating look so cool and easy to do. When I try it myself…well that’s another story!  On the Liberty Channel, I found of a program called, “The Wacky World of Bruce Barry,” This guy, Bruce, transforms youth ministry facilities, annexes, playgrounds etc. from blah-blah-boring to a work of art!  Bruce has a full-service theming and design studio to boot; his 25,000 square foot facility is near Tampa, Florida, and he has a crew of more than 30 talented artists working along side of him.

“My objective is simple,” says Barry, “to create fun, exciting environments at any budget that fire you up and leave you captivated by your surroundings!”

This Emmy winning show might help you get those creative juices pumping inside once again!…. Now…. if I only had those really nifty tools that they use!
