The Last Confederate

Saturday, April 14th, 2012

I just enjoyed The Last Confederate, the story of Captain Robert Adams.  You can find this movie in the Video on Demand section, under Action / Thriller.

This is the story of a man who lived in South Carolina at the time of the Civil War.  He joined the army and fought on the side of the South.

What I liked about this movie was that Captain Adams was loyal to his people, he was a fierce fighter, and he had southern hospitality!  You often heard him say “Yes Ma’am”, “Thank you”, and other such things.  And he was not mean, but rather courteous, toward his slaves (he had some).  (I am not endorsing slavery when I say that; it is merely an observation of his attitude.)

His wife was from the North, and so she was conflicted about the war.

He survived the war, rebuilt his life, and he and his wife started a school.

The movie was produced by his descendants.

There is some violence (it’s hard to avoid it in a war movie), but it isn’t gratuitous.

For all but the youngest, I recommend this movie.

God is The Master Artist!

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Photobucket
I was saddened to hear about the passing of “The Painter Of Light” Thomas Kinkade. What an inspiration his art is to this world! I remember checking out a Thomas Kinkade Gallery, and being in awe and wonderment over all the beautiful paintings! He was definitely a talented and gifted man!

I noticed on the NRB network a program called, “God Is The Master Artist” and just had to check it out. A Christian artist, Jerry Yarnell, (of “Yarnell School of Fine Art”) was the host, and he was instructing how to paint a sunset. I like how he started with an already painted brownish-red canvas to get rid of the “whiteness” of the canvas. I marveled over how he could fuse together a mess of colors on his brush and get just the right consistency! He definitely made it look way too easy. My combination of colors tend to turn out looking like mud! Check out his web site at http://josephyarnell.com/

Anticipation Of Sky Angel 2.0

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

We have been waiting for the exciting new platform and it will be here before you know it! I received the following great news in my email box:

“The anticipated launch of Sky Angel 2.0 is coming soon and Sky Angel will initiate the new platform, providing you with the ultimate viewing experience.
After Sky Angel 2.0 is launched, for those who have a second generation NXP set top box, a message will appear on your television that will read: STB Upgrade. Please wait. This process can take several minutes. Do not power down. During this message, please refrain from powering down the box. Please be patient, as this process can take several minutes.
The next message that will appear asks you to confirm a firmware upgrade. At this time, using your Sky Angel remote, select “confirm” and press OK. Once again, please refrain from powering off your box in the middle of the upgrade. Powering down during the upgrade may cause your box to become locked. If this happens, it may not be possible to continue using your box. When the upgrade is complete, your receiver will automatically reboot itself by shutting down and turning itself back on.
After the system has rebooted, the Sky Angel 2.0 upgrade will be complete! The next picture you’ll see is the new Sky Angel homepage.
We hope that you enjoy everything that the new platform has to offer and we thank you for your patience. You’ll be watching the best in family- friendly entertainment on Sky Angel 2.0!”

On a personal note I am sorry I haven’t posted for awhile our move was harder then expected for me physically.  I have carpal tunnel in both hands and the move aggravated the CT.  I am finally beginning to feel better daily but I have to pace myself so I heal.

God Bless!

Movie Review: Mercy Streets - JCTV - 03/24 - 1800

Monday, March 26th, 2012

Mercy Streets is one of my all time favorite Christian films! Catch it tonight for free on JCTV before it falls off 48hr Playback!

The star filled cast includes Eric Roberts, Lawrence Taylor(L.T. Ok more football star but hey!), Stacey Keach, and maybe the best Christian film actor out there, David White playing twin brothers. One is a young pastor(Jeremiah) and the other twin is a con man and a criminal(John).

I’ll leave the trailer to give movie detail but I want to get this posted so folks get  achance to see it tonight! In short this is one of the grittiest mean streets action dramas of any Christian production ever. It has all the action and tnsion without fould mouths or sex. The cinematography and soundtrack is also top notch in this film. I was surprised when I first saw the film and enjoy it every time I see it.

One warning. There is a lot of talk prior to the movie starting when you click on it. This is cool but there are some spoilers. Better to FF to the movie and watch the commentary stuff afterwards. God bless and Enjoy!

The Amish — A People of Preservation

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

I found this video under the Vision Video section of Video on Demand.

I have always been fascinated by the Amish, but I never knew very much about them.  So this video caught my attention.

There were two things which stood out in this documentary:

  1. The Amish like to keep life simple.  They don’t want modern technology to complicate life.  Therefore, although they do adopt some modern technology (e.g. internal combustion engines), they shun most of it.  The test is whether or not it will overcomplicate life.
  2. They don’t shun outsiders; they simply avoid the outside ways influencing their lifestyle and values.

I don’t think that it would cost very much to build a house in the Amish community, because they all get together and build stuff for each other.  And if your barn burns down, the entire community will build you another one.  They’ll even rebuild a barn for a non-Amish family.

I found myself wanting to join an Amish community after watching this documentary!

Cure For the Common Cold!

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

For the Last two weeks, my family has been battling influenza with everyone taking their turns(family of six) with the high fever, crazy headache, runny nose etc. etc. I was out of it for like five days lying on the floor, bed… any place I could find that would relieve the pain in my swelled up back due to the virus. During that time, I could not be more thankful to Sky Angel’s programming for the kids! Sick or not, kids have a tendancy to share their “fire ball” of energy with everyone else including unwelcome ailing parents that are lying unresponsive on the floor! It is so nice to be able to turn on “kid friendly” entertainment like KTV, Smile of a Child, Sprout, Qubo, JCTV, GMC etc… My kids pratically glued themselves to some of the shows giving me much needed time to heal! I know that’s not always healthy, but when your sick and needing a break….yes go for it!

Movie Review: Come What May - TBN - 03/18 at 0000

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

I wanted to make sure and get this review out today as it is the last day you have to see this film free on 48hr playback. Waht an awesome feature for us SkyAngel folks huh?

Now to the movie. In our current social climate where the documentary “180″ has shaken up may lives about abortion it semed an opportune time for TBN to show this film and for me to review it.

Come What May is filmed at and acted by students and faculty from the famous Home Schoolers College “Patrick Henry College.” They are famous not only because they are a Home Schoolers College but also because they are an excellent Academic institution! Their training in legal issues is some of the best in the country. It is that area of excellence where we find this movie set.

There is a couple subplots dealing with family tension and budding young romance, However, the line that threads it all together is the moot court proceeding held at Patrick Henry in order to overthrow Roe Vs. Wade. Abortion is met head on in a legal and moral challenge in this film.

The acting is far from Oscar worthy, but it is quite passable. The gem here is the message. I reccommend you go watch this film today before it slips away. God bless and enjoy!

Robin Good & His Not So Merry Men!

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012
Skyangel has just added this brand new Veggie Tales movie called “Robin Good and His Not So Merry Men” to their VOD line up today. I believe that it was actually just released to DVD today as well! My 2 year old son saw the picture for it when I was checking the Just Added section and he asked me very excitedly to click on it please! All 4 of the kids love watching Veggie Tales so we gave it a go. Once again Veggie Tales has produced a fun family friendly cartoon for the whole family. Robin Good is 51 minutes long and has two stories; a short about Jr. thinking everyone forgot his birthday but he actually didn’t know about leap year, and the main cartoon about Robin Good, a kind hearted hero who fundraises from the rich to feed the poor. In this semi play off of Robin Hood, Robin Good does not steal but he helps the poor by raising money instead. His Merry Men get fed up with working hard to raise funds, so they decide to steal instead. Robin is hurt by this but refuses to join them. In the end he learns to get past his hurt and help others even if they have wronged him. There are some laugh throughout and the silly song is fun too. I wouldn’t say this is Big Ideas best work but it is worth watching for sure!

Robber of the Cruel Streets - The Prayerful Life of George Muller

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

I’ve always been fascinated by the story of George Muller — how he ran several orphanages without ever appealing to people for money.  So I was very glad to find his story on Sky Angel!  You can find it in the Vision Video section of Video on Demand.

The orphanages came later in Muller’s life.  When he was young, his father wanted him to be an Anglican minister, so that he would have a guaranteed salary and benefits.  But Muller ended up getting saved, and he decided to put his faith into action — he attended, and ministered in, churches, and he did practical ministry.

After trying to go on the mission field, he decided to reach out to the orphans of England, who were basically abandoned children on the rough streets.  He made a commitment not to solicit funds, but only to ask God for support.  God enabled him to open up three orphanages within a year!

Eventually, he needed to move, so he built a new facility on 7 acres of land.  Again, God provided everything he needed.

After leaving the orphanages in capable hands, he embarked on a preaching tour in North America.

He outlived both of his wives and his daughter.

This is a really great story!

My Outlaw Brother

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

My Outlaw Brother is a western movie staring Robert Stack and Mickey Rooney.  At the risk of giving away too much of the movie, let me say that Robert Stack plays a bad guy, and Mickey Rooney plays a good guy.

Mickey Rooney goes into Mexico in search of his brother.  He is accompanied by a Texas Ranger who wants to find Mickey Rooney’s brother, because he is a criminal.

You wonder how the two will ever get out of Mexico alive, let alone find the guy they are looking for.

It’s a great movie, and you can find it under Action/Thriller in the Video on Demand section.
