Movie Review: Cutback - Cornerstone - 02/06 - 48hr Playback

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

Found this movie cruising through the channels. Decided to give it a look and ended up watching the whole thing. If you can’t tell by the picture the trailer will make it very clear that this is a teen surfer movie. However, it is a Christian surfer movie. The plot is not terribly intricate or original but it is not bad either. Teenage surfer boy with his nerdy friend hang out on the beach, surf, go to school, etc. New guy in town is now rival surfer. Girl of interest is a Christian. Main character Luke, lives in a home where mom is Christian and Dad is basically one in name only. Luke is not a Christian.

Probably needless to say that there is tragedy and death in the movie. There are salvations and life change throughout as well as some revealing secrets.

Let me get to the Gospel message presented. Maybe the best part of it is the title of the film: Cutback. The youth pastor uses it to explain what one needs to do to be a Christian. A cutback is a surfer term for making an instant direction change. In other words, repentance. Luke asks whether the pastor thinks he’s a bad person and the answer is good if not followed up well. The pastor says he doesn’t think Luke is a bad guy but that the Bible says we all sin and fall short of the glory of God(Rom. 3:23). The problem is that most people if you throw out that verse either don’t see it as a big deal or get downright offended.

We need to let people know not just that we are all sinners but what that means. God has given us a mirror so that people can look into it and see their sin for what it is. That mirror is God’s law, or the Ten commandments. No one goes to human court with a simple charge of “law breaking”. You receive a detailed list of charges. God is the ultimate just judge and wants us to know what we are being charged with. Every lie makes us liars. Every thing taken that doesn’t belong to us makes us thiefs. Every lustful or hateful thought makes us adulterers and murderes respectively. The list goes on and each of us has a big list!

When you know your sin you recognize the justness of God punishment in Hell. This is where again the film falls short. There is no mention of Hell and consequences of sin. There is the typical modern message of, ‘God has a wonderful plan for your life, but you have to make a choice.’ This film like many try to tie Romans 8:28 to every person on the planet which of course isn’t biblical. All things only work together for good for those who love God, those called according to His purpose. If you aren’t called of and loving God, the plan for you is eternal torment in Hell. Jesus Himself commanded us to fear the one who can destroy body and soul in Hell(Mat.10:28).

Without showing the reality of our sinfulness according to God’s word, followed by the just penalty of that specific sinful life, the message of God’s forgiveness of sins carries little or no weight. Sadly much of modern evangelism has become offerring a cure for a disease we’re afraid to tell the patient they have.

There is also a good point where a surfer reveals he’s a Christian late in the film and Luke tells him he never knew he was. The surfer then appears kind of bummed and says he better work on his witness. Sadly Luke tells him no. Friends, we all blow it in our witness and God’s grace covers it. However, as film makers, let’s not do anything that people who feel convicted over their need to do as Christ commanded be told “no” as a balm for their conscience. The right line from Luke should have been something like: “I guess so bro!”, or “Yeah man, you should!”

They do give a hat tip to God’s sovereignty saying He’s in control depsite bad things happenning. This of course is where some of the surprises are revealed. What makes this movie theologically problematic is that it paints a picture that is unrealistic or at least uncommon.

In most of our life circles not everybody we know are Christians or end up as one. Also unlike this film, they are not going to come to Christ unless they are witnessed to and given a biblically based Law/Gospel picture of God’s holiness, our sinfulness, and His amazing grace to save us. There are three main Christian characters in Luke’s life outside of church. Not one of them presents the Gospel to him. Everyone seems to be banking on the church and the youth pastor.

One of the Pastor’s main jobs is for the equipping of the saints for the work of the ministry(Eph. 4:12). We as Christians should be preaching the word to all creatures as we are ALL commaded to by Christ(Mrk.16:15). Most people are not going to come to church or youth group and get saved. This is for movies. The stats show that most people are saved through the witness of close friends and family members. Sadly the stats also say that roughly only 2% of professing Christans share their faith. That of course is probably a big reason for the statistic that American church growth is also only 2% new converts. This movie goes further to promote church/youth group invitation rather than people obeying Christ and personally witnessing to friends and family and calling them to repenmt and believe in the Gospel(Mrk.1:15)as Christ commanded.

Overall Cutback was a well made(Production value)youth group oriented film. It is totally safe for family viewing and has some good surfing footage if you like that. There’s no language or sex. There is some drinking and threats as well as a tragic accident. The importance of family unity and healing is promoted as well. Despite the misguided Gospel presentation and wrong emphasis on Pastor led evangelism rather than individual evangelism it was an OK film that may bless some. I shed some tears and even found the production value and acting pretty good. Could have been better, but better than many out there. Catch it today of you wanna see it!

Movie Review: Thomas Kincade’s Christmas Lodge - VOD/Christmas(Duh?!)

Monday, December 19th, 2011

I liked this movie. Minus a little off theology I really liked this movie! You have no doubt seeing that it is a Christian film. It has the quality of a Hallmark movie with good acting and a good story. However, while Hallmark will sometimes make a movie with a hat tip to God this movie is too full of prayer and talk of God and His activity in peoples lives to make it on their channel I’d guess. Mary is the main character who while hiking in the woods with her city slicker boyfriend finds an injured little girl who happens to be the daughter of a guy named Jack who owns the now defunct, “Christmas Lodge”. If you watch the trailer below you’ll see a spoiler so if you don’t like that, don’t watch the trailer. I couldn’t find one that didn’t have the spoiler in it either so sorry for that. So I won’t give anything away but let me just say this. If you like a movie that is pretty much fairy tale perfect, and everybody is Christian, and they “Live happily ever after”, you’ll love this movie! If you’re like me sometimes you really want a movie to be a break from reality, in a good way. This movie is that. I Look forward to more Thomas Kincade movies on SkyAngel. He’s both a painter and movie maker of light it seems. Enjoy!

Wretched TV and a Shameless Plug for My Ministry Too!

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

OK everybody knows I’m a big Wretched fan. Well now my bias is even a little bigger. Todd recently introduced a new segment on the show where you send in a clip less than a minute long that you feel might bless people. Well I previously recored what I called “The Shortest synopsis on the Gospel of Mark Ever”. I put it on youtube a while ago. So I remade it for his new segment “Preacher’s Potluck”. At the bottom of my video I listed the web address to the evangelism ministry I head up. So it was kind of a “shameless plug”, as Todd himself likes to say. So all that to say if you watch Wretched for this Tuesday at 1:00am on 48hr playback you’ll see my segment giving you the shortest synopsis of the Gospel of Mark ever! God bless and enjoy!

Here’s the original clip from youtube below if you miss the show and still want to see the synopsis.

Documentary Review - VOD Exploration Films/JCTV 11/10/11: Coming Clean

Saturday, November 12th, 2011

Have you ever seen thwe movie Scarface with Al Pacino? If you haven’t, please don’t. I watched it in my pre Christian years and I can’t report any spiritually beneficial content that wouldn’t be outweighed by tons of filth. I only ask because Jorge Valdez, the subject of “Coming Clean” was a real life Tony Montana! This guy literally had it all in the world’s eyes. He was a multi million dollar drug dealer and money launderer. He was a top mover in the Medellin Drug Cartel. He had over a million dollars of cars in his garage, speedboats, women galore, so much overflowing money he had a gold $10,000 shower head! He had his own God complex and no fear of the real God. His powerful testimony of God’s grace to save him and use him for His glory is inspiring and worth sharing, especially if you know anybody who thinks gangs and drugs is glorious. You’ll love the unique and classically violent sport God uses to bring Jorge the gospel! Catch it today on 48hr Playback if you want it for free on JCTV, or you can rent it for $.99 on VOD. God bless!

See the trailer below(And notice Sky Angel has the documentary for less that half of Amazon!)

Movie Review: VOD - WWJD (Just Added/Drama)

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Whether you think the WWJD phenomenon of a few years back was great or just too gimmicky and doctrinally questionable, you will probably have reason to enjoy this clean well made movie that glorifies God. This film is basically a remake of the classic “In His Steps”, film based on the book of the same name. John Schneider (Smallville, Dukes of hazzard, Holy Man Undercover, Hidden Secrets) is the stranger who wanders into town and challenges peoples’ sleeping or nonexistent faith. What may be best about this movie is that it is well made. On par with the average Hallmark movie. You wouldn’t feel embarrassed reccomending this as a family friendly clean movie even for non Christians. Yet it definitely doesn’t shy away from boldly proclaiming it’s about Jesus (Hence the title!). So especially for the fans of the book or the classic movie you’ll probably enjoy WWJD! God bless!

Movie Review: TBN 10/10/11 - Arthur: Pilgrim(The Cross)

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Have you heard of the guy who carried the cross through some 60 odd contries on foot covering more than 26,000 miles? That is more than the circumfrence of the earth at the equator! Well that’s what this documentary is about. The man’s name is Arthur Blessit. Now I wouldn’t agree with all of Arthur’s choices or theological stances, but I am encouraged and challenged by his passion for God and for the people Christ went to the cross to save. Arthur carried this 80lb., 12ft. cross through lands both friendly and deadly. He’s carried the saving Gospel to lost people in accordance with the great commission. From Northern Ireland in war zones with Billy Graham, to sneaking into Beirut with his son to meet with and share the Gospel with Yasser Arafat, to travelling alone through the uncharted jungle of Central America, to Soviet Russia, New Guinea, across Africa, and on and on and on. I like a quote I heard from Mark Driscoll lately from one of the popular Elephant Room sessions hosted by Pastor James MacDonald where Mark said about Greg Laurie who catches alot of flack from people sitting around doing nothing while Greg is out leading thousands to Christ. So where I disagree with Arthur on some issues I whole heartedly rejoice in our shared passion for the lost and am  humbled by him literally walking his faith. May God bless you as you enjoy this film. Catch it on 48hr playback on TBN Channel 127 before it’s gone.

Movie Review: In the Blink of an Eye - TBN 08/21/11 (48hr)

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

Do you like end time thriller movies? Now to maybe a better question. Do you like well produced end times thriller movies? Well then, I reccommend to you Pure Flix Entertainment’s, “In the Blink of an Eye”. In short, picture “Groundhog’s Day” meets “Left Behind” and you get an idea of this film. The film stars David A.R. White and his wife as a husband and wife in the film. This helps to make a believable performance for the two. David plays a cop who with the help of his Christian partner saves a Brittney Spears knock off from death by a kidnapper. In repayment her manager/boyfriend invites both cops and their wives on a yacht vacation in the Bahamas or someplace like it. Of the foursome only David is not a Christian. His mariage is suffering because he let’s his cop work run his life. After a fun day with his wife on a beach she dissapears. After frantic searching and drama he wakes up the next day to his wife in the boat again with him. They repeat the same day again! Eventually David gets the hint that God is up to someting and he tries to “Do the Christianity thing.” and it doesn’t work. See the movie to see how God works on him. As I’ve said in the past Pureflix makes good movies. High production value and good stories. So if you wanna catch this one for FREE, swing by TBN and watch it in the next 30 hours or so! If you miss it you can catch it and many others on SkyAngels’ exclusive PureFLix VOD section! God bless and enjoy!

Movie Review: The Road to Emmaus - VOD

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

I think one of the most incredible teachings any Christian would like to hear that is not in the Bible is the one Jesus gave to His disciples on the Road to Emmaus. Well I know I’d love to hear it! Now we don’t get that teaching but we get an idea of what it could have been. From the same people who brought us Matthew and ACTS now we have The Road to Emmaus. Bruce Marchiano returns as Jesus as He explains to his disciples the message of Christ throughout the Bible. It is a story of redemption and grace. I would have loved to have seen this handled with Passion level film production and length but we don’t always get what we want. However, this is a good God honoring movie that can bless any believer at any stage in their walk. A good family movie. Just remember this is not a word for word scriptural account like Matthew or Acts. This is using scripture to give a best guess of what Jesus shared with His disciples that day. That being said it is soaked with scripture and is overall pretty good for the low budget. Folks who liked Marchiano as Jesus will like him here as well. Enjoy!
